A Jackson County, Mo., jury has returned verdicts totaling about $82 million against a debt collection firm that had demanded payment from the wrong woman. The jury awarded $251,000 in damages to Maria Guadalupe Mejia Alcantara and assessed $82 million in punitive damages against Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC, a debt collection firm. The case began two years ago when Ms. Alcantara was sued by the company for not paying a credit card debt of about $1,130. The bank had sued the wrong person because Ms. Alcantara didn’t owe the debt. Ms. Alcantara filed a counter-claim in the suit, alleging violation of the federal fair debt collection act.
