It might be good for all of us to take a close look at where the Tea Party members of Congress have taken us in recent weeks. Since the Tea Party Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives held our economy hostage to protect tax breaks for the rich, and punish everyone else, we have seen:
• the first downgrade of U.S. credit in history;
• a tremendous drop in the stock market; and
• dissatisfaction with Congress at a historic peak, according to all of the polls.
There is one thing for certain: a large majority of Americans are pretty well fed up with Washington, and we should have learned from experience that isolated anger won’t solve anything. What is badly needed in our Nation’s Capitol are non-partisan solutions and united actions by our elected officials. It doesn’t take an expert to figure out we need to put folks back to work in this country, and to do that, more jobs must be created. It’s been reported that huge corporations are hording tremendous sums of cash and are not hiring workers. That’s counterproductive and hurts the economic recovery. Republicans in Congress believe more tax cuts for the rich are the answer, but that has never proved to be an answer to an economic melt-down and it isn’t today.
Even though Congress, under threats by the Tea Party zealots, concocted a debt agreement that sold out middle income Americans, the Tea Party groups still weren’t satisfied. They continue to do everything they can to destroy what’s left of the American Dream. Actually, their efforts are designed to directly affect the President. It appears they will do most anything to see him defeated in next year’s elections. Regardless, I believe President Obama and the Congressional leadership should ignore the Tea Party zealots and work together – to create jobs, to invest in America – and rebuild the American Dream for all U.S. citizens. In my opinion, that’s exactly what folks back home in all parts of the U.S. really want. Based largely on their recent performance, Congress is as unpopular today as it collectively has ever been. Unfortunately, the dislike affects the “good” members in both Houses, as well as the “bad.” Folks are pretty well fed up and expect their elected representatives in our Nation’s Capitol to get down to work and to do so in a bi-partisan manner. That’s not too much to ask!
It’s time for the American people to let the Tea Party bosses know that their tactics affect more folks than just our low-income citizens. They also are very bad for middle-income citizens. In fact, many believe that destroying the middle class will lead to the total demise of the United States of America as a world power. The Tea Party zealots – funded by the rich and powerful Koch brothers and other billionaires – are doing great damage to our country, both at home and abroad. The Tea Party movement rose – thanks to their super-rich benefactors who were happy to see “angry citizens” hit the streets and rally on behalf of the super rich – to the point that their followers now have great influence in Congress. Many elected Republicans aligned themselves with the movement. Once they sign up, it appears they have a hard time breaking free. I believe it’s time to stand up to the Tea Party movement and expose it for what it really is.
