Dee Miles, who heads up our Consumer Fraud/Commercial Litigation Section, joined the firm in 1991. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, worked for a bank for three years, and then decided to enter Cumberland School of Law. While a student at Cumberland, Dee was selected to study “Comparative International Law” at the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany. After graduation Dee served as a law clerk to John M. Patterson, Chief Judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, during 1989-90. He was then selected to serve as a Staff Attorney in 1990-91 for the Alabama Supreme Court under the late Henry Steagall, a very well-respected member of the High Court.
Since Dee joined our firm, he has been a pioneer in consumer fraud and commercial litigation nationwide. He also has demonstrated great leadership, helping to bring about the firm’s numerous record-setting verdicts for clients in consumer and insurance litigation. Dee, a leader in complex litigation on the national level, has been involved in a number of important cases, including the American General race-based premium multi-district litigation in Columbia, S.C.; Co-lead counsel, the GenRe Market Conduct MDL in a Tennessee federal court; Co-lead counsel in the Medicaid Fraud Litigation in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, Kansas, Utah, Hawaii, and Alaska. The AWP cases have led to the “McKesson Litigation” in which Dee is serving as lead counsel in Louisiana, Kansas, Hawaii and Alaska. Dee has also been appointed by Federal District Judge James Selna to serve in a leadership role on the Plaintiffs Liaison Committee in the Toyota Sudden Unintended Acceleration MDL Litigation pending in a California federal court. This committee is coordinating the litigation for the entire country.
Dee has served as either lead and or co-lead counsel in numerous cases resulting in multi-million dollar verdicts. Dee has settled hundreds of cases for clients over the years with the total settlement amounts exceeding $1 billion. Because of his leadership in the consumer fraud / commercial litigation areas of law, Dee has been a regular speaker at state, regional and national seminars. He also has authored numerous publications on consumer fraud and commercial litigation. Dee has been featured on The Today Show, NPR, CNN, USA Today, CBS, Fox News and other national news broadcasts and publications.
Dee is from Homewood, Ala., where he met his wife, the former Sandra Turnblad, while they were attending Homewood High School. Dee and Sandra married after they both graduated from college. They have four children, two girls and two boys. The Miles’ are active members of The Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Montgomery. The Roman Catholic Church has honored Dee and Sandra by inducting them into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The Order is responsible for promoting Christianity in the Middle East and protecting the holy shrines in that region of the world. Dee was recently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Order.
Dee has worked as a volunteer for the Montgomery County YMCA, and he has coached several sports teams. He has regularly helped to raise funds for the Boy Scouts of America, Father Walters Home for the needy, Montgomery Catholic Schools, Catholic Social Services and several other charitable organizations. Dee was appointed by Dean John Carroll of the Cumberland School of Law, to serve on the Advisory Board of the law school. The mission of the board is to promote and preserve Cumberland’s commitment to “seek wisdom to temper justice with compassion.” Dee will serve as President of the Advisory Board for the 2011-2012 term.
Dee credits his success in law to his faith, saying his daily goal is “to serve the Lord by giving generous love to my family and hard work to our clients, in that order.” Dee says “life is a constant balancing act, but if we know the priorities of the Lord first, then our families and our work third, we can achieve anything in life we seek.” We are blessed to have Dee serving in an important leadership role in the firm.
