Over the years there has been a great deal of debate over the Ten Commandments. Some folks believe that they no longer have any application to our lives in modern times. But I believe these commandments are as needed today as they were in Old Testament times or when our Nation was founded. Many believe, and I am one of them, that our forefathers sought the help of God to build a nation founded on Biblical principles.
Rev. Walter Albritton tells me that our founding fathers considered the Ten Commandments the “essential foundation stones of American government.” Walters points out that President James Madison, a key person in the drafting of our Constitution, once said: “we have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”
Walter also told me that in his opinion “the more we as a people surrender our reverence for the Ten Commandments, the greater will be the moral decline of our country.” When I look around and see the state of affairs in our land, I shudder to think what President Madison would say if he were around today.
