United States District Judge James V. Selna has appointed Dee Miles from our firm to the very important Liaison Committee in the litigation against Toyota. As we reported last month, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation selected Judge Selna, who is from the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, to hear all litigation arising out of the Toyota Sudden Unintended Acceleration problems. This will include both individual personal injury and death claims as well as all consumer Class Actions filed on behalf of Toyota owners.
Dee, who heads up our Consumer Fraud section, was selected from a pool of more than 100 lawyers and law firms to help lead this litigation. Those appointed to the committee will be in charge of directing this litigation for the entire country, as well as for some foreign countries that will be included, and that is an awesome responsibility. Lawyers appointed to this committee will have the job of gathering documents, questioning witnesses, arguing the legal issues and preparing the case for trial. The committee will also coordinate any settlement that may take place. This is a very important appointment and one that our firm takes seriously. Toyota is a tough opponent and we don’t expect them to roll over and play dead. They play hard ball and are already waging a full-blown public relations campaign. But appointment to the committee puts our firm in a leadership role in this important litigation. Hundreds of Toyota lawsuits have already been filed in federal and state courts around the country.
