Tacoma family settles wrongful death lawsuit with state
The family of a Tacoma, Washington, man who was beaten to death by an ex-convict under state supervision has settled its lawsuit against the State Department of Corrections for $2.2 million. The family of Darrel Johnson settled the wrongful death lawsuit during mediation last month. The family contended the state department failed to do enough to monitor the man convicted of killing Johnson three years ago when the 69-year-old was taking a morning walk. Andrew J. Brown was on parole from a robbery conviction and had remained free despite an arrest for disorderly conduct and his admitting using drugs. Brown pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison.
