Sara and I attended the 5th annual Hall of Fame Dinner, which is put on by the Alabama Lawyers Association, on Nov. 11. It was a moving and most inspirational event. Danielle Ward Mason, a lawyer in our firm, is the current president of the Association. She presided over the event and did an outstanding job. The 2015 Hall of Fame Honorees were five outstanding individuals, each having done tremendous work for the betterment of mankind over the years. These are the persons honored: Judge U. W. Clemon, former Supreme Court Justice Ralph S. Cook, former U.S. Magistrate Judge Vanzetta Penn McPherson, Judge Myron Thompson and Mahala A. Dickerson (posthumously).
The persons honored are selected because of their courage, intellectual prowess and professional achievement that have far exceeded the norm. The honorees were described as champions of justice and without a doubt each of these individuals was a champion. I can say without reservation that the honorees by their efforts have made Alabama a better place for all of our citizens and they have set the bar very high for others to follow in their collective footsteps.
I left the event that night feeling much better about the state of affairs in my state. While Alabama has its share of problems, so long as we have men and women cut out of the same cloth as were the honorees we will move forward and not backwards as we deal with the problems we face. We have made progress in solving the racial problems that plagued our state and held us back, socially and economically, but we still have much to do to stamp out any traces of racism that hang around today. My prayer is that there will be others who will continue the fight that was waged – and is still being waged – by of the honorees, and that Alabama will truly become the land of the free and the home of the brave.
God has blessed all Alabamians through the tireless work of the honorees and we are much better off today than we were when their work began. My further prayer is that we will become a nation where all people will truly love their God and their neighbors. When that happens, we will experience both joy and peace as a nation and will be a shining beacon on a hill for all other nations to see.
Because of the Thanksgiving holidays this issue was sent to the printer much earlier than usual. Hopefully, by the time this issue arrives, all of our readers and their families will have had a blessed Thanksgiving. We all have so very much to be thankful for. May God Bless each of our readers and their families as we enter the Advent Season.
