It’s hard to believe, but 5 years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010. Because of the anniversary of the spill, a great deal has been written about the worst disaster of its kind in history. Over the past 5 years, we have learned that BP is a master at both public relations and deceit. There have been articles written, which were motivated by BP, trying to convince folks living in the Gulf states that they are actually better off today because of the disaster. While BP can’t sell that story, it won’t keep them from trying.
The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected BP’s appeal, and that means the class settlement is final. The claims center has now started processing business claims again under the new matching rules set out by the Claims Center. It should be noted that claims can still be filed up to June 8, 2015, under the settlement. Any business not excluded in the settlement in any part of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, or the west coast of Florida may qualify for compensation. More than $5 billion has been paid out to date under the settlement.
