Television ads by BP and media stories portray a Gulf that has bounced back from last year’s devastating oil spill. That’s certainly the message being put out by BP. As you will recall, the oil giant promised to “make things right” for their victims. But what the ads and media accounts fail to tell us is that thousands of business owners along the coast whose livelihoods are tied directly to the Gulf of Mexico continue to struggle with devastating losses. As a result, workers’ jobs are in jeopardy. To put it mildly lots of folks are hurting badly. When you step back and assess the situation, there’s the spin and there’s the reality. The disconnect between those two extremes continue to anger and frustrate Gulf residents.
The livelihood of folks in the coastal states continues to be impacted by the spill. Actually, I have found that the further one gets from the Gulf, the more folks believe BP’s television ads and are convinced things on the coast are back to normal. But all of us who are involved in the oil spill litigation know, in reality, extremely serious problems still exist for folks all along the Gulf. To say things are back to normal is far from reality.
