I wonder if my Tea Party buddies know our state is actually taking money from the federal government. If they don’t, they will be shocked to learn that Alabama’s government is guilty of this “fiscal sin.” It was revealed recently that the federal government is actually paying the salaries of about 40 Alabama State Troopers. The Department of Public Safety laid off 38 troopers, but they were immediately rehired using federal grant money. According to the agency, motorists won’t see any changes on our state’s highways.
It should be pointed out that the Department is facing a $6 million budget shortfall. The federal grant will cover almost half of that amount. What would have happened if the federal government hadn’t bailed the state out again? Also, what will happen in the future when the federal money may not be available? The services rendered by the Department of Public Safety are very important for Alabama citizens. In my opinion, the Alabama Legislature has a duty to adequately fund the Department. I have always believed that we have an obligation to fund law enforcement adequately at every level of government. That’s a state and local responsibility in Alabama. We can’t depend on the federal government to bail us out when our financial problems continue to pop up.
