I mentioned above that Democrats in the Alabama Legislature again have Constitutional Reform on their agenda. It appears they will try to have a statewide referendum on whether citizens want a new state constitution. The Democrats want to allow citizens to vote yes or no on a constitutional convention that would rewrite Alabama’s 1901 document. Rep. Demetrius Newton of Birmingham tried to pass a similar resolution in the past, but his efforts failed.
Rep. Merika Coleman of Midfield says the 1901 Constitution needs to be rewritten because it was designed to hold back women, blacks and poor whites. It’s sort of hard to disagree with that assessment. Perhaps, an equally important reason for a new constitution is the simple fact that it’s been amended over 1,000 times since 1901. I would like to see the people of Alabama have the opportunity to write a constitution that would reflect their views and be fair to all of our citizens. Will that happen any time soon? Unfortunately, I seriously doubt it!
