Alabama Wins Another National Tourism Award

11/5/2008, 12:35 P.M. CST - THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Year of Alabama Arts promotion by the Alabama Tourism Department has won another national award. The Travel Industry Association has presented Alabama with its “Discover America” award. The Year of Alabama Arts promotion was previously named best state promotion by the National Council of State Tourism Directors and received Travel Weekly’s Magellan award for promotion of culture and the arts. Tourism leaders were honored recently at the Capitol for their work on the promotion.

National awards like these are helping redefine the image of Alabama and erase stereotypes that have been around for 50 years. The Year of Alabama Arts promotion put a spotlight on the arts throughout the state. It promoted everything from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra to folk artists like Lonnie Holley and Mose Tolliver. Lee Sentell, who heads up the Department, does an outstanding job for Alabama and its citizens. Without a doubt, Lee is a “super salesman” for our state.
