I have been sort of surprised that Governor Riley hasn’t called the legislature into special session to deal with a number of urgent problems. Apparently, the Governor believes all of our problems can wait until next year. I hope he is correct. It’s clear as a bell that the Governor and Alabama Legislators will have their hands full in 2009. We are facing severe budget short falls in both the general and special education trust fund budgets. We will have proration in the current education budget and that’s a certainly. The general fund will face a deficit of around $100 million. Either revenues will have to be found or services cut drastically. Things could get pretty interesting when 2009 rolls around.
